Professional Experience and Expertise:
Delivery of high quality and strategically-driven research on zoonotic diseases
- Leadership of an internationally renown research group focusing on food-borne diseases including the epidemiology, ecology, pathogenesis and control of Campylobacter
- Publication of over 90 relevant peer-reviewed references and book chapters since 1981
Provision of evidence-based advise to policy makers and others, including the food production industry including on:
- European and international research on zoonoses to national and European departments and agencies
- use of antimicrobials to food production and pharmaceutical industries and regulatory bodies
- the control and prevention of campylobacter in poultry to national, European and international agencies and bodies, the food production industry and retailers
- the standardization and harmonization of baseline surveys for campylobacter and salmonella to European agencies
- the vaccination of cattle and badgers against bovine tuberculosis to national government departments
- the detection and control of bovine venereal campylobacteriosis for international trade regulations
Successful management of project objectives, milestones and deliverables·
- Inception, planning, negotiation, implementation and delivery of the Network of Excellence MED-VET-NET (www.medvetnet.org ). This FP6-funded project involved over 300 scientists from 16 partners in 10 EU member states. Under my management 88% of 212 milestones and 92% of 211 deliverables were achieved. ·
- Organizer of the 8th International Workshop on Campylobacters, Helicobacters and Related Organisms, Winchester, 1995; Co-organizer of the 1st and 9th Workshops in Reading and Cape Town respectively and International Adviser on all other Workshops
International scientific reputation
- Assessment of project proposals and research outputs for research funders; international universities; and national, European and international government institutes and agencies
- Editorial committee member Applied & Environmental Microbiol. since 2001. Peer review refereeing for many international journals
- Keynote speaker Food Safety Congress, the Netherlands 2008, American Society for Microbiology 2005, American Vet Ass 2005, Society for General Microbiology 2002
- Rapporteur for EFSA Scientific Colloquium on Campylobacter, Rome 2008 and member of EFSA Working Group on Campylobacter. Invited participant in WHO/FAO Working Groups
Communication and interpersonal skills
- Given presentations to Ministers, Members of Parliament, House of Lords, school children and general public audiences and well as been interviewed by the BBC news, Radio 4 and by newspaper journalists.
- Leadership of the highly successful European Network of Excellence Med-Vet-Net bringing together over 350 scientists, many of with international reputations, clearly demonstrated my exemplary communication, negotiation, organisational and interpersonal skills.
